How long a visit can last
A Standard Visitor can usually stay in the UK for up to six months per visit. Longer stays are possible only in narrow circumstances, such as certain kinds of medical treatment, and are the exception rather than something to plan around.
What the visa permits
The route is broader than its name suggests. GOV.UK sets out a range of permitted activities, and one trip can combine several of them:
- Tourism, and visiting family or friends.
- A defined set of business activities — meetings, conferences, negotiations — as distinct from doing a job.
- Transit through the UK on the way somewhere else.
- Short recreational courses and study, within stated limits.
- Private medical treatment, and volunteering with a registered charity for a limited period.
What it does not permit
The prohibitions matter more than the permissions, because this is where applications come apart:
- Employment, paid or unpaid. The narrow exceptions are permitted business activities and approved paid engagements — not work in general.
- Claiming public funds.
- Marrying or registering a civil partnership. That requires a Marriage Visitor visa, not this one.
- Living in the UK through frequent or successive visits.
The repeat-visit limit
This is the one that catches people out, and it is worth stating plainly: you may not use a Standard Visitor visa to live in the UK by taking one visit after another.
There is no published number of days that makes this safe, which is precisely why it is misunderstood. People reason that each trip was under six months, so each was permitted, and conclude that the pattern must be permitted too. That does not follow. The assessment looks at the pattern — how much of the year you spend in the UK, how much of your life is there, and whether the visits look like visiting or like residence assembled out of visits.
Someone who spends most of the year in the UK on visitor conditions can be refused entry even where every individual trip was within its limit, and that refusal then sits in the history of every application afterwards.
What this means for UAE residents
For a UAE resident this cuts both ways, and the favourable half is the one applicants under-use. Your residence visa, your job here and your family situation in the Emirates are evidence that your life is here and that you will return — often a stronger picture than the same applicant could present from their country of nationality.
The unfavourable half is that a UAE resident who travels to the UK several times a year, holds property or family there, and spends long stretches in the country is describing exactly the pattern the rule exists to catch. The answer is not to disguise the pattern. If the honest description of your plans is closer to residence than to visiting, the right route is a different one — and that is a better conversation to have now than after a refusal.
