Moving to Portugal, end to end.
A relocation runs on two timelines at once — the Portuguese one, and the one where you close down a life in the UAE. Most of what goes wrong happens where they meet. This is the whole shape of it, with links into the detail for each part.
Start with the pathway
The residency route determines almost everything downstream — which evidence matters, what the document plan looks like, and how long the preparation takes. Settling it first avoids assembling the wrong file well.
For most people arriving from the UAE the choice is between D7 and D8, and it turns on where your income comes from rather than how much of it there is.
The UAE side, in the right order
The most common mistake is dismantling the UAE side before the Portuguese side is secure. Your residence status underpins your banking, your tenancy and much of the evidence a residency application relies on — once it is cancelled, a grace period starts and your access to normal resident services changes.
Keep your residence visa in place until departure is genuinely settled. Leave banking until late; it is easier to close an account from the UAE than to regain access from Portugal.
Start the police clearance certificate and its attestation early, because both have queues you do not control, and collect original civil documents while you still have easy access to them.
Moving as a family
Dependants can generally be included on either residency route, subject to the applicable rules, and the income expectation rises with the number of people it has to support.
Each family member needs their own documentation, and documents linking the family together — marriage and birth certificates — become central rather than incidental. Where children are involved, school records and medical histories are worth gathering before departure rather than requesting from abroad.
What waits on the other side
Landing on an entry visa is not the end of the process. There is an appointment with the Portuguese immigration authority to convert it into a residence permit, and then the practical registrations that make daily life work.
Expect Portuguese administration to run on its own schedule. Appointment availability, processing, and local practice at your area office are outside your control and outside ours — plan with margin rather than to the day.
