The NIE, and what it is not.
The Número de Identidad de Extranjero is a personal identification number for foreigners with economic, professional or social dealings with Spain. It is genuinely useful and frequently necessary — and it is not residency, which is the misunderstanding worth clearing up first.
It is not a visa, a residence permit, or permission to work
Spanish consular guidance is explicit: a NIE obtained through a consular office identifies the bearer to all levels of the Spanish public administration, but does not entitle the holder to reside in Spain or prove residence there.
So the NIE is not a residence permit, not proof that you live in Spain, and not work authorisation. It does not start a residency process, it is not a stage of one, and holding it gives you no immigration status you did not already have.
It is worth being blunt about this because the NIE is routinely sold as though it were a first step toward Spanish residency. It is not. If residency is your goal, the route is the Non-Lucrative Visa or the Digital Nomad Visa, and the NIE is at most an administrative detail alongside them.
What it actually is
A personal, unique and exclusive number assigned to foreigners who, for economic, professional or social reasons, are engaged in activities related to Spain and need to be identified there. It is how Spanish public administration and Spanish institutions identify you.
You cannot obtain one simply because you would like to have one. The application requires you to state the economic, professional or social reason, in Spanish, and to provide documentary evidence of that reason. The reason is the substance of the application, not a formality.

On doing it without appearing
Official procedure requires the physical presence of the applicant or a duly accredited representative. A representative needs a power of attorney that expressly states they are empowered to present the NIE application — a general authorisation is not the same thing.
We will not tell you the whole thing can be done with nobody appearing, because the published procedure does not support that. What we can do is prepare the application properly, get the reason and its evidence right, and coordinate the appointment so that the appearance is the only part you have to be present for.

A consular fee applies and is paid to the Spanish consular office, separately from anything Vizabolt charges. The published figure carries a past-year label and consular fees are revised, so we confirm the current amount at the time of application rather than printing one here.
