One route, and it is a job-search route

The Opportunity Card — Chancenkarte in German — is a residence title under Section 20a of the German Residence Act that allows the holder to come to Germany and look for qualified work. It is issued for up to a year, it permits part-time work and short trials while you search, and it is designed to convert into a work-based residence permit once you find a job.

That inversion is the point. You are not proving you can support yourself from existing income, as Portugal’s D7 asks, or that you already work remotely for someone abroad, as the digital-nomad routes ask. You are proving that you are qualified, that you can support yourself while you search, and — if you take the points route — that enough other things about your profile point the same way.

It is the only German route we currently work on. Germany has several others, including the EU Blue Card and the skilled-worker permits, and the Opportunity Card is often the step before one of them rather than an alternative to it. We would rather support one route properly than list six.
